What Is a Respiratory Therapist?
A respiratory therapist (RT) is a licensed clinician who assesses, treats and monitors people who have trouble breathing. RTs care for patients with conditions like COPD, asthma and pneumonia, and for patients who rely on a ventilator or a trach, from newborns to older adults.
What Is Respiratory Therapist Staffing?
Respiratory therapist staffing means booking a credentialed RT or respiratory therapy assistant to cover a shift your own team can’t fill, so breathing treatments and airway care carry on when someone is out. What an RT may do varies by state and by building.
What Respiratory Therapists Do
They give nebulizer and inhaler treatments, set up and adjust oxygen, and help patients clear their airways. Much of this runs to a set schedule across the unit, so one missing RT can leave treatments running late.
Where patients are on a ventilator or have a trach, RTs run vent checks, change settings as ordered, suction and keep the airway clear. They also support the team during codes and rapid responses.
A respiratory therapy assistant, also called a respiratory care assistant or technician, handles setup, equipment checks and routine treatments under an RT’s direction. Where policy and state allow it, one can ease a busy shift.
Types of Respiratory Therapists
There are a variety of respiratory therapists, from entry-level and advanced RTs to specialists and assistants, and each credential covers a different level of work.
| Credential | What it means | Usually booked for |
|---|---|---|
| CRT · Certified Respiratory Therapist | The NBRC’s entry-level credential for RTs | Breathing treatments, oxygen therapy and stable vent residents |
| RRT · Registered Respiratory Therapist | The NBRC’s advanced credential, earned after the CRT | ICU, emergency and critical care units that require it |
| Specialty credentials · NPS, ACCS, RPFT | NBRC specialty exams taken on top of a CRT or RRT | NICU and pediatrics, adult critical care, pulmonary function testing |
| Respiratory therapy assistant | Not a national credential, and titles vary by facility | Setup, equipment checks and routine treatments under an RT |
Respiratory Therapist Staffing by Care Setting
Respiratory therapists work where patients need help breathing, so the demand clusters in a handful of units rather than across a building: the ICU, a vent wing, a weaning unit or a patient’s home. When that unit’s RT calls out, there’s rarely anyone on the floor who can take the work. On Clipboard, the open tour goes to RTs close by.
LTACH patients are often weaning off ventilators over weeks, with daily breathing trials that the RT runs and charts. Cover a call-out the same day and the weaning schedule doesn’t have to slip, so each trial can go ahead on the day it was planned.
Subacute vent and trach units care for residents who may stay on a ventilator for months, usually with a small team of RTs who know each of them. One call-out is a big share of that team, so post the tour early to keep the unit at strength.
Patients on home ventilators, trach or long-term oxygen need RT visits for equipment checks, settings and teaching the family. When your RT is away, post the booked visits and they can still happen that week.
Book Per Diem RTs and RTAs for Flu Season
Flu, RSV and COVID tend to push respiratory work up every fall and winter, in ICUs, emergency departments and vent units alike.
Booking a per diem respiratory therapist by the shift lets you cover that peak without hiring for demand that drops away again in spring. You choose the dates, and when the census settles, you simply stop posting.
Respiratory therapy assistants can share the load too. Where policy and state allow it, an RTA can take on setup, equipment checks and routine treatments, which frees your RTs for assessments, vent changes and rapid responses.
What Our Expert Says
Respiratory therapist staffing used to mean a coordinator working down a phone list at six in the morning, hoping someone picked up. That time came straight out of the unit. Now the open tour goes out to RTs nearby the moment it’s posted, and the coordinator can get back to handover.

Frequently Asked Questions
You post a shift and it goes straight to respiratory therapists and assistants near you. 95% of shifts are covered when posted a day in advance, and you can post a same-day shift when an RT or RTA calls out before the next round of vent checks.
You pay an hourly rate for the RT or RTA you booked, and it costs nothing to post a shift. Rates reflect local pay, so they differ by area. There’s no minimum commitment and no contract to sign for the shifts you post.
We connect you with a replacement at no extra cost as soon as we know. If an RT or RTA cancels ahead of the shift, a replacement is looked for automatically. If the shift can’t be filled, you’re not charged for it.
NBRC credentials are checked before an RT can pick up a shift, and an RTA’s qualifications are checked the same way. None of that lands on your desk, so the time you’d otherwise spend vetting goes back to running the unit.
Yes. A respiratory therapy assistant, also called a respiratory care assistant or technician, supports the RT with setup, equipment checks and routine treatments. Titles and duties vary, so book one where your policy and state allow the role.
Yes. RT and RTA shifts on Clipboard are booked one at a time, with no contract to sign and nothing to commit to up front. Post a single tour or a run of them, for a call-out, a vacancy or the extra work that respiratory season brings.
Hospitals, long-term acute care hospitals, nursing home vent and trach units, and home health agencies all book RTs and RTAs on Clipboard. Each has different work to cover, from ICU tours and weaning trials to vent checks and visits at home.
Yes. If an RT or RTA is a good fit for your team, you can offer them a permanent role. There’s no placement fee and no conversion fee for making the offer, and the professional decides whether to accept.
