What Is a Speech Language Pathologist?
A speech language pathologist (SLP) is a clinician who assesses and treats problems with swallowing, speech, language and cognitive-communication. In healthcare settings, most of an SLP’s caseload is adults recovering from illness, injury or stroke, and older adults with swallowing difficulties.
What Is SLP Staffing?
SLP staffing is how a facility brings in an SLP or SLP assistant for the days its therapy team is short, so evaluations and sessions don’t stall while someone is away. What an SLP may do varies by state and by building.
What SLP Staffing Covers
Memory, attention and problem-solving work, often with residents living with dementia, helps them take part in their own care. When the SLP is out, those sessions tend to slip first, so cover the day and the plan keeps moving.
After a stroke, aphasia and dysarthria can leave a patient unable to ask for what they need. Regular SLP sessions help rebuild those skills step by step, so a gap of a few days is felt, and cover keeps sessions on schedule.
An SLP assistant carries out treatment sessions the SLP has planned, supports residents at mealtimes and writes progress notes for the SLP. Assistants work under a supervising SLP, and your state sets how that supervision runs.
Who to Book: SLP or SLP Assistant
Some speech therapy work needs the licensed clinician, and some can be carried out by an assistant. Book the role the work needs.
| Role | What they cover | Book them for |
|---|---|---|
| SLP · Speech Language Pathologist | Swallow evaluations, diet texture changes and treatment plans | New referrals, admissions on modified diets and re-evaluations |
| SLP assistant | Treatment sessions the SLP has already planned, under the SLP’s direction | Ongoing therapy sessions and mealtime support |
Speech Therapist Staffing Across Care Settings
In most buildings the speech team is the smallest in therapy, often one SLP working part-time across several units or even several sites. When that one person is out, swallow referrals, diet changes and therapy sessions all wait together. Put the open day on Clipboard, where SLPs in the area can see it.
For long-stay residents, swallowing changes slowly and mealtimes are where the risk shows. An SLP who checks diets as needs change helps the kitchen and nursing team keep meals at the right texture, month after month. See Long-Term Care Staffing
Home health SLPs visit patients after discharge, working with family members as much as with the patient. When your SLP is away, post the visits already scheduled, and families keep the support they were told to expect at home. See Home Health and Hospice Staffing
In a hospital, a bedside swallow screen often stands between a patient and their first meal after admission. Cover the open SLP shift the same day, and patients on the unit aren’t left waiting on a diet order while the therapist is away.
What Our Expert Says
SLP staffing matters most in the weeks nobody notices. Speech, language and swallowing therapy builds session on session, so when your SLP takes a week off, a patient can lose ground they worked hard to gain. Facilities that book cover for planned leave, not only for sick days, usually keep their patients’ progress moving.

Frequently Asked Questions
You post a shift and it goes straight to SLPs near you. 95% of shifts are covered when posted a day in advance, and you can post a same-day shift when a swallow evaluation can’t wait for the next scheduled visit.
You pay an hourly rate for the SLP you booked, and it costs nothing to post a shift. Rates reflect local pay, so they differ by area, and there’s no minimum commitment or contract to sign for the shifts you post.
Yes, where your state recognizes it. An SLP assistant carries out treatment sessions the SLP has planned and supports residents at mealtimes. Assistants work under a supervising SLP, so post the shift alongside the SLP who directs the plan.
Yes. You book SLP cover by the shift, without a contract and without a minimum number of days. Post one day for a new referral, or several in a row to cover leave or a vacancy on the therapy team.
We connect you with a replacement at no extra cost as soon as we know. If an SLP cancels ahead of the shift, a replacement is looked for automatically. If the shift can’t be filled, you’re not charged for it.
Yes. If an SLP is a good fit for your team, you can offer them a permanent role. There’s no placement fee and no conversion fee for making the offer, and the professional decides whether to accept.
