What Is a CNA?
A certified nursing assistant (CNA) is a trained aide who gives residents and patients hands-on daily care under the direction of a nurse. CNAs complete a state-approved training course and competency exam, and are listed on their state’s nurse aide registry.
What Is CNA Staffing?
CNA staffing means booking certified nursing assistants by the shift when an aide calls out or your census climbs, so daily care on the hall keeps to its routine. What a CNA may do varies by state and by building.
What CNAs Do
Repositioning schedules, lift and transfer work, walking and fall precautions run on the clock through the shift. This is the work that slips first when a building is an aide short, so post the gap as the call comes in.
CNAs take vitals and weights, track intake and output, and tell the nurse when a resident seems different from yesterday. Cover keeps those checks on schedule, so changes are still noticed while your regular aide is out.
CNA Staffing Across Care Settings
CNAs work in a variety of care settings, from nursing homes and assisted living communities to hospitals. The hands-on care is similar wherever they work, but the pace, the patients and the routines change from one setting to the next.
In assisted living, what a CNA does is set by state assisted living rules rather than federal nursing home rules, and in some states it includes help with medications. Tasks vary by state and by building, so check your own policy for each shift. See Assisted Living Staffing
In hospitals, CNAs support nurses on med-surg, telemetry and step-down units with bathing, mobility, vitals and patient checks. Post the open shift when the gap appears, and a credentialed CNA nearby can take it before the unit runs short of hands for the rest of the day.
What Our Expert Says
CNA staffing can double as recruiting. Per diem CNAs who pick up a run of shifts in your building get to know your residents and routines, and when one is a good fit for your team, you can offer them a permanent role with no placement fee.

Fast Answers To
Frequently Asked Questions
You post a shift and it goes straight to CNAs near you. 95% of shifts are covered when posted a day in advance, and you can post a same-day shift when an aide calls out before the first round of morning care.
You don’t have to. Clipboard checks each CNA’s certification before they can work a shift, so there’s nothing for you to chase or file. That time goes back to the residents on your halls.
You pay an hourly rate for the CNA you booked, and it costs nothing to post a shift. Rates reflect local pay, so they differ by area, and there’s no minimum commitment or contract to sign for the shifts you post.
CNAs typically cover bathing, dressing, meals, turns and transfers, vitals and resident rounds, working under the nurse on the hall. They generally don’t give medications or do nursing assessments. Tasks vary by state and by building.
We connect you with a replacement at no extra cost as soon as we know. If a CNA cancels ahead of the shift, a replacement is looked for automatically. If the shift can’t be filled, you’re not charged for it.
Yes. A one-to-one shift has a CNA stay with a single resident or patient who needs close watching, such as someone at high risk of falling. Post it like any other shift. What a sitter may do varies by state and by building.
Yes. Post night and weekend shifts just like weekday ones, and per diem CNAs nearby who work those hours will see them. Those are often the hardest shifts to cover from your own schedule, so put them up once the gap shows.
You can post as far ahead as you need, from a same-day gap to shifts weeks out for vacations and holidays. Posting a day or more ahead gives the best odds, since 95% of shifts posted a day in advance are covered.
Yes. If a CNA is a good fit for your team, you can offer them a permanent role. There’s no placement fee and no conversion fee for making the offer, and the professional decides whether to accept.
