What Is Assisted Living?
Assisted living is a residential setting for older adults who live mostly independently but need some help with daily life, such as bathing, dressing, meals and medications. Residents have their own apartment or room, staff are on hand around the clock, and nursing support is there when needed rather than as continuous medical care.
What Is Assisted Living Staffing?
Assisted living staffing means booking CNAs, LPNs, LVNs and RNs to fill open shifts while your own staff are out, so residents’ routines keep going. What each role may do varies by state and by building.
What Assisted Living Staff Do
Medication help ranges from reminders to giving medications, depending on the role and the state. LPNs, LVNs and RNs give medications within what your state allows, on each resident’s own schedule.
Wellness nurses check on residents, review their medications and spot changes in condition early. They pass anything new on to the care team, so small problems are picked up before they grow.
Many communities have a secured memory care neighborhood for residents living with dementia. Staff there keep routines steady and help residents stay calm and oriented through the day.
Many states expect staff to be awake on site overnight in assisted living. Overnight staff check on residents, answer call lights and help anyone who wakes in the night.
Who to Book for Which Shift
Most assisted living shifts call for one of three roles. Book the one the work needs.
| Role | What they cover in assisted living | Book them for |
|---|---|---|
| CNA | Bathing, dressing, mobility, meals and resident checks | Day, evening and awake overnight floor shifts |
| LPN or LVN | Medication passes and treatments, where your state allows | Medication rounds and treatment-heavy shifts |
| RN | Assessments, care plans and wellness oversight | Wellness nurse cover and move-in assessments |
Assisted Living Staffing by Community Type
Assisted living covers a wide range of buildings, from a six-bed home on a residential street to a campus with hundreds of apartments. A large community runs a full roster of aides with a wellness nurse, while a small home may have one person on shift. Either way, a call-out leaves a gap someone has to fill that day.
Memory care staffing covers standalone memory care communities and the secured neighborhoods inside assisted living. Residents rely on routine and recognition, so put the gap up early rather than leaving the unit short into the evening.
Board-and-care homes look after a handful of residents with one or two staff on shift, so a single call-out can leave the house without cover. Post the shift straight away and CNAs close by will see it, often within the same morning.
Senior living staffing on a life plan campus spans independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing. Book cover for the assisted living side here, and use Long-Term Care and Nursing Home Staffing for shifts in the skilled nursing wing. See Long-Term Care and Nursing Home Staffing
What Our Expert Says
Assisted living staffing is often hardest after dark. Awake overnight shifts and weekend evenings are the ones a small team finds toughest to cover from within, so communities that cope well post those gaps first and keep their own staff fresh for residents’ busiest hours.

Fast Answers To
Frequently Asked Questions
You post a shift and it goes straight to CNAs and nurses near you. 95% of shifts are covered when posted a day in advance, and you can post a same-day shift when someone calls out before the morning routine starts.
Each state sets its own rules. Some set ratios or minimum staff on site, while others leave it to the community. Clipboard doesn’t advise on compliance, so check your state’s rules, then post the shifts and roles you need to meet them.
You pay an hourly rate for the role you booked, and it costs nothing to post a shift. Rates reflect local pay, so they differ by area, and there’s no minimum commitment for the shifts you post.
We connect you with a replacement at no extra cost as soon as we know. If a CNA or nurse cancels ahead of the shift, a replacement is looked for automatically. If the shift can’t be filled, you’re not charged for it.
Credentials are checked before a CNA, LPN, LVN or RN can pick up a shift. None of that lands on your desk, so the time you’d otherwise spend vetting goes back to your residents.
Yes. Post memory care shifts the same way as any other, for CNAs or nurses. Residents there rely on routine and recognition, so post the moment a gap appears, and you’ll often see the same faces come back for the neighborhood.
Yes. Post overnight shifts the same way as day shifts, and they go out to CNAs and nurses nearby who pick up nights. Whether your community needs someone awake on site overnight is set by your state’s rules, so check those first.
CNAs, LPNs, LVNs and RNs. CNAs cover daily living support and resident checks, LPNs and LVNs cover medication passes and treatments, and RNs cover assessments and wellness oversight, each within what your state allows.
Yes. If a CNA or nurse is a good fit for your community, you can offer them a permanent role. There’s no placement fee and no conversion fee for making the offer, and the professional decides whether to accept.
