Clipboard
Clipboard was founded by Gary William Flake in January 2011 with the simple goal of helping people save and share the parts of the Web that they care about.
Our Vision & Mission
Since the Web is over 20 years old, doesn't it seem strange that the state-of-the-art for saving something from the Web has been to copy and paste it into an email? We think so, which is why we wanted to build something both simple and powerful to address this common need.
While our service is simple, with think our long-term vision for where this can go is actually pretty significant. Basically, we believe that every user of the Web will eventually have many thousands of clips from the Web that are personally precious and meaningful. Our vision is a world in which anyone can save and collaborate without the friction that we see today. And our mission is to help you to create, use, and organize your stuff.
Make no mistake about it: this is a big deal because it touches on the very future for how the Web can evolve and how users can interact with it. Because of the importance of these issues, we'd like to take a moment to explain our values as they pertain to the Web.
Our Values
The set of actions that you take on the Web – what you click, view, rate, like, or dislike – is a personal reflection of who you are and a core component of your online identity. Your digital identity is forever and inseparably yours. Others may have license to use your digital history, but they are renters of the data; you are the owner. You have the right to remember your online experiences: you should be able to easily clip portions of Web pages that are visually true and functional. You have the right to have an opinion about what you’ve experienced: you should be able to annotate and organize the clips that you’ve saved. You have the right to curate: you should be able to pull together clips from multiple information sources and interact with them as a singular collection. You have the right to both privacy and transparency: you should be able to clip things that only you can see, share clips with others, or broadcast your interests to the world.
We also believe that every right comes with the responsibility to respect all who are impacted by our choices. We believe that respecting a content source requires that they be cited by name and referenced by link, indirectly giving value back to the source. We believe that presenting clips in a uniform format reduces the likelihood that one could be mistaken for the original source. We believe in copyright and will always strive to reconcile the rights of copyright holders with the rights of the individual. We believe that entirely new value can be realized when patterns are discovered from looking at a whole instead of a part.
Our goal is to help you organize your online existence. In pursuit of this goal, we aspire to create new value in a way that is consistent with these ideals. But above all else, we believe that the best of the Web emerges when individuals have the tools to discover, create, and share with as little overhead as possible.
